Highlights of the Year

Here's a summary of the last year to give you a flavour of all the fun we've had. Thanks to everyone involved in organising all these amazing activities and events! Looking forward to more of the same this year!

Camps

Our Cubs and Scouts joined other groups from across the district at Woodhouse Park for an activity packed weekend.

The cubs did us proud at the annual Evolution camp in Cirencester, taking part in various challenges and assault courses, with one of our teams bringing home the winners trophy.

The Scouts had asked to include more cycling activities this year so their wish was granted with a cycle camp. They cycled from the hut in Henleaze to Tintern in Wales and set up camp for the night, before a more relaxing journey home by car.

Fun on the water

Watersports covered by the group this year have included, kayaking, paddleboarding and swimming. Cubs took part in a Cabot District swimming gala and the Scouts braved the cold waters of Henleaze Lake. The inflatable course at the water park was a big hit with Scouts and Explorers.

Walking, climbing & den building

We’ve enjoyed night hikes, den building, climbing, local trails and walks (the most popular of which incorporate a visit to the fish and chip shop). The Scouts also took part in the Cotswold Marathon.

Cooking and campfires, come rain or shine

We love a good campfire and won’t be deterred by a bit of rain. The Scouts especially have been doing a lot of cooking lately, their latest dish, fish curry, was a success despite some initial reservations.

Celebrating events

We celebrate all the major calendar events with themed sessions; Burns night (with haggis and a visit from a bagpiper), Lunar New Year, Pancake Day, Easter (involving a hunt for chocolate eggs, of course), Halloween (carving some scary looking pumpkins), Bonfire Night (competing to make the best Guy Fawkes effigy for the bonfire) and of course Christmas. We see out the year with the annual AGM and BBQ.

New skills

Scouting is all about learning new skills and having fun in the process. A lot of new skills have been gained this year. To name a few; first aid, fire-hose spraying (on a fire station visit), den constructing, team-building, archery, gliding (for the Explorers), air-rifle shooting, science experimentation, drumming, tomahawk throwing, navigation, cooking, baking and even ironing (it’s important to keep those uniforms looking smart!)

If this all sounds like fun and you fancy getting involved, we're looking for volunteers to help organise and run activities, share their skills, assist leaders or become leaders themselves. Please get in touch and let us know how you would like to help.
